Clash of the Titans 2.0 results from Lakeside Speedway

The 33z Racing Team traveled to Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kan., on Tuesday for the Clash of the Titans 2.0 USMTS Casey's Cup Series event in the Major League Bowhunter Central Region. In the heat race Zack started sixth and finished fourth. This sent him to the B-Main. In the "B" he started second and won it to transfer to the feature event. VanderBeek started 13th and finished fourth, just missing the Mesilla Valley Transportation Hard Charger award which went to Terry Phillips. Zack sits second (-27 points) in the Major League Bowhunter Central Region Points standings to leader Rodney Sanders.

Sanders extends win streak with “Clash of the Titans” score

KANSAS CITY, Kan.—Defending USMTS national champ Rodney Sanders rolled into Lakeside Speedway’s “Clash of the Titans” Tuesday as the points leader in the Major League Bowhunter Central Region presented by Day Motor Sports, and rolled out with another win and $3,000 in his back pocket.

The 24-year-old from Happy, Texas, set the tone under the Kansas City sun by earning the Sybesma Graphics Pole Award during heat race action.

Little changed after the sun went down as ‘The Rocket’ led all 35 laps of the main event from the pole and recorded his fifth win in the region. His first came here at the same half-mile oval on April 11.

A couple of late-race cautions erased a comfortable lead for Sanders and allowed defending track champion Nic Bidinger, and then Terry Phillips, to show the leader the nose of their cars. Phillips, in fact, slid in front of Sanders and led the 25th lap, but Sanders returned the favor and withstood the challenge.

He pulled away from the field over the final handful of laps and sailed away to his 12th triumph of the 2014 season and 30th of his USMTS career. It was also his third straight win.

Phillips, who started 11th, held on for the runner-up paycheck while Bidinger remained third at the finish with Zack VanderBeek and Trevor Hunt coming home fourth and fifth.

Stormy Scott, Kelly Shryock, Jordan Grabouski, Dereck Ramirez and  Dylan Smith rounded out the top 10 finishers.

On Wednesday night, July 16, the USMTS Casey’s Cup powered by Swan Energy steamroller blasts into the Osage Casino Caney Valley Speedway in Caney, Kan., for the first trip to Kerry Gorby’s quarter-mile semi-banked bullring since the 2010 season.

Under the direction of Gorby, the Caney Valley Speedway reopened in 2008 after sitting idle and in disrepair for the four years prior to that. Gorby and his staff have given the facility a complete top-to-bottom facelift since then, including new restrooms, concessions and pit buildings, plus the addition of an air-conditioned press tower, a new and improved p.a. system and thousands of gallons of fresh paint.

A challenging short track, the Caney oval is inviting to drivers as it “requires more talent than talk, more about what’s under the helmet rather than what’s under the hood,” said Gorby. “It’s more likely to scare off cubic dollars than anything else because those dollars don’t spend well here.”

Jason Hughes picked up the first win for the USMTS in 2009, with Morgan Bagley and Dustin Boney following in second and third. In the series’ return the following year, Johnny Bone Jr. held off Jeremy Payne and a 20-year-old up-and-comer named Rodney Sanders to garner the victory.

Pit gates will open at 4 p.m., grandstands open at 5, hot laps are at 7 and racing starts at 7:30. Also on the evening's schedule of events will be Pure Stocks and B-Mods.

Tickets are just $15 and race fans can pick up $2-off discount coupons on Wednesday at the Casey's General Stores location in Caney and Coffeyville.

The Caney Valley Speedway is located 0.8 mile west of the junction of US 75 and US 166 on CR 1600. For more information visit www.caneyvalleyspeedway.net on the World Wide Web. You can also find them on Facebook.

Action moves to the I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb., on Friday and Saturday, July 18-19, for the 4th Annual Silver Dollar Nationals where the USMTS Modifieds will once again share the spotlight with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series.
